Placing coffee and e-liquid in the same category is assumed by one to be an arbitrary conclusion, but it is actually based on scientific thought as they both encompass two closely related by-products—caffeine and nicotine, respectfully. Moreover, the concomitants which come as result of indulging in the two substances both have a similar effect on the body and mind.
The positive effects the user experiences while on either nicotine or caffeine are as follows: An enhancement in cognitive function, which typically includes increased focus, memory, creativity, and higher executive function. These two substances have been used for their enhanced capabilities by some of the greatest minds to ever inhabit the earth—such as Albert Einstein.
Albert Einstein was a frequent pipe smoker and caffeine user who had made unprecedented accomplishments in the field of physics, which would forever change are understanding of the world. Einstein rarely discussed his nicotine use, but there is one quote of his which simply radiates with wisdom:
“I believe that pipe smoking contributes to a somewhat calm and objective judgement in all human affairs.”
-Albert Einstein, 1950
The most common negative attribute of caffeine and nicotine is that they are both highly addictive substances, and can lead to symptoms of withdrawal if stopped abruptly. Other ordinary side effects are typically experienced when the user exceeds standard doses and they are: irritability, severe jitters, headaches, fast or irregular heartbeat, and others which vary based on the individual.
As one can easily see, nicotine itself is no different than that of caffeine, as they both produce nearly identical effects when consumed. But one might ask, why is nicotine label as an evil and dangerous substance? Well, that simply comes down to the product which it is enclosed in, tobacco.
There is no need to exploit the dangerous effects of tobacco use as one can simply see that by turning on their television. But what one needs to know is that if nicotine is consumed in a safe manner as well as in moderate dosages, it is no different than a cup of coffee.
Even though the properties of caffeine and nicotine are extremely related, the two substances are taxed drastically different. Excessive taxes are not placed on one’s morning cup of coffee, but there are plans to place insane tobacco taxes on one’s morning vape. The reason why tobacco is said to be taxed so aggressively is due to the dangerous and fatal side effects it has on the user, and they are thought to be put in place to discourage one from smoking.
But now with vaping acting as a new method for the consumption of nicotine—which in theory is suppose to be safe—is it still correct to pass these excessive taxes to e-liquids as well? If legislators do continue with passing these bills then technically they would have to tax caffeine products the same as well. This is obviously completely contingent on the idea that vaping is found to be relatively safe and that it won’t lead to any serious long-term side effects.
