Vaping in public: Why do people assume the worst?

Every vaper has experienced that awkward feeling of someone staring or whispering while vaping in a public place. In fact, yesterday afternoon, I was driving home in gruesome NYC traffic when I decided to enjoy a quick vape on my Subtank Nano to ease my nerves. But then, I glanced out my passenger side window, and to my surprise, I seen an older woman simply shaking her head at me. After seeing this, I decided to quickly roll down the window, and say “it’s only vapor, no worries”, but that didn’t help at all—she looked at me as if I had 10 heads and 12 hands. So, I simply gave up my attempt of explaining myself, rolled back up my window, and continued to vape away.

This story is the perfect example of why the public needs to be educated on vaping, not because we want them to vape as well, or to inform them that it is a potentially harmless activity; but rather, so it can simply be socially acceptable and not frowned upon.

But the issue arises when trying to explain the concept of vaping to an older individual who has absolutely no knowledge of the subject. We attempted to do so with our video—Vaping: Explained in 2 Minutes—with the intention to simply prime the average person on the idea of vaping. Using analogies—such as “a digital form of smoking”—allows for an individual with no science background to understand what it is. Moreover, by using words like tank rather than atomizer, it increases the chance that one will understand the topic without being intimidated. The video attempts its best to give a general overview—in a two minute timeframe—so those who have never been exposed to vaping at least know its not a drug or something illegal.

We believe the best way to introduce the world to vaping is with simplicity—using words and phrases people already know, but then, building the positivity of vaping on top of those words and phrases. It is still going to be a difficult task, but if you have a family member or friend who is still puzzled by the topic, then simply share our video with them. Spreading the word of vaping in a simple manner will only benefit vapers everywhere, allowing us to vape without judgement.
